Dynamic Headspace DHS

Dynamic Headspace DHS

Accumulation of volatile and semi-volatile analytes from the gas phase above a liquid or solid sample on an adsorbent.

Dynamic Headspace

The DHS option enables the automation of the dynamic headspace technique with the MultiPurposeSampler MPS.

With the DHS option, you can enrich volatile and semi-volatile analytes from the gas space over a liquid, viscous or solid sample on an adsorbent and separate the moisture at the same time. The DHS option offers full temperature control and a compact design with no cold or active spots in the sample path. The DHS option offers a wide range of applications. The assignment of sample and adsorbent tube is freely selectable. By means of specially adapted and automated thermal desorption in the thermal desorption unit, the analytes can be analyzed immediately after enrichment. The system is controlled by the MAESTRO software.

How the DHS works

The sample is tempered in a closed vial. At a set time, the MPS positions an adsorbent tube over the vial. Vial and tube are connected to each other according to the wash bottle principle. A permanent gas flow continuously flushes the outgassing analytes from the gas space above the sample and transfers them to the adsorbent tube. The assignment of sample and adsorbent tube is freely selectable. Depending on the setting, all or only some of the analytes from a sample are collected on an adsorbent tube. It is also possible to concentrate the analytes from several samples on just one adsorbent tube.

Benefits

Analytes from the gas space above a liquid, viscous or solid sample are continuously enriched on an adsorbent. A wide variety of adsorbents can be used for enrichment. The full temperature control allows the targeted separation of the analytes from the sample matrix and moisture. The compact design prevents the carry-over and loss of analytes and reduces maintenance costs. The DHS option is very powerful in terms of detection, with continuous headspace extraction significantly more analytes are enriched on the adsorbent than with classic headspace technology. The MAESTRO software allows you to control the entire system easily and intuitively.

Variants

Two variants are available for the dynamic headspace technique:

  • DHS for use with standard TDU tubes
  • DHS 3.5+ for use with 3.5-inch tubes (industry standard)

Both variants offer a wide selection of vial sizes and adsorbents. The selection depends on the sample matrix, the adsorption behavior of the target analytes and existing laboratory configurations.

Option

The DHS Large option enables the DHS option to be scaled up for a large-volume sample.
