Advancing Market Sample Analysis with Dynamic Headspace (DHS) and Multi-Volatile-Method (MVM)
Market Sample Analysis is an important part of understanding products, formulations, and aroma profiles in the flavor industry. Traditionally, the Symrise workflow has relied on Likens-Nickerson Extraction (SDE), complemented by additional analytical methods to cover compounds that are not sufficiently recovered by SDE alone.
In this webinar, Thomas Albinus from GERSTEL will first provide a short introduction to Dynamic Headspace (DHS) and the Multi-Volatile Method (MVM). MVM combines multiple trapping steps from a single sample under different extraction conditions, enabling compounds with different evaporation properties to be collected and subsequently analyzed by GC-MS.
The main focus will then shift to the customer story: Sven Schick from Symrise will present how DHS-MVM has been developed and evaluated for Market Sample Analysis in daily laboratory work. He will discuss the existing workflow, method development, analytical results, and the potential benefits of moving toward a more automated MSA process.
Symrise's evaluation showed comparable or better reproducibility than the established SDE workflow, together with substantial reductions in processing time and manual workload. The approach also reduces consumables and avoids organic solvents during sample preparation.

Market Sample Analysis at Symrise - from a multi-step SDE workflow toward automated DHS-MVM
The current MSA workflow requires SDE extraction as well as additional GC-MS measurements for compounds that are not sufficiently recovered. The evaluated DHS-MVM workflow aims to combine this analytical coverage in a more automated process.
In the Symrise evaluation, the potential new workflow reduced processing time from approximately 7 to 3.5 hours and manual workload from approximately 180 to 30 minutes.
