User Seminar D/A/CH 2021 - From Users for Users

This online seminar was held in German.

Plastic is very durable under normal environmental conditions and decomposes through chemical-physical or microbiological processes into ever smaller particles, the microplastic. Microplastics are a rapidly growing topic in environmental and food analysis and are distributed ubiquitously.

However, the input can be of very different origin, e.g. in the environmental sector most importantly carelessly disposed trash and tire abrasion, release in waste disposal, drifting of artificial turf. In production processes, for example in food manufacturing, abrasion can introduce microplastics into the product. The abrasion of plastic from textiles through washing processes is also a cause of microplastics.

The basis of the examination of a matrix for microplastics is a measurement concept, which includes the selection of detection methods, the sampling procedure and the sample preparation. The lecture gives an overview of this overall socially relevant topic and highlights in particular the analytical approaches for the detection of microplastics.
