Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) was developed at the Research Institute of Chromatography in Kortrijk, Belgium. SBSE is an equilibrium-driven technique similar to Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME). Instead of a sorbent fiber for SBSE a stir bar coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as sorbent is used. The advantages of SBSE arise from the high amount of sorbent phase and the possibility to mix the sample by the Twister during extraction. This leads to significantly faster extraction and an up to 1000 times higher sensitivity compared with SPME.
